In her speech ‘The world tilted, social impact in the evolving practice of design’, Wina Smeenk observes that designers are increasingly committed to the crucial social issues of our time. The field of design has thus acquired a broader focus.
This also changes the role of designers. They no longer only design for users, but also together with those involved. These so-called ‘stakeholders’ are citizens, governments, (non-)profit organisations and knowledge institutions. Moreover, designers as human beings themselves are often part of an issue. This raises new questions: How do designers incorporate their own experiences into these co-design processes? How can other stakeholders share their interests, experiences and knowledge empathetically? And how can they work together to encourage individual and collective (behavioural) change? In her speech, Wina Smeenk addresses the above questions and outlines the research and design agenda of her and her team.
