Graduation: Gamification & Heritage

Graduation: Gamification & Heritage

In the second semester of 2023-2024, twenty graduates from various study programs worked together in the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam. Students from Tourism Management, Leisure Management, Integral Safety Management, Law, Business Studies and Creative Business, among others, joined forces to tackle urban challenges.

In her graduation project, Melanie Hupje focused on conveying heritage stories through gamification and storytelling. In collaboration with City Game, she developed a city game in Hoek van Holland, which presents local heritage in an interactive and engaging way.

Melanie combined game design with narrative elements to make heritage more accessible and attractive to a wide audience. The city game allows participants to discover the history and culture of Hoek van Holland in a playful way, which ensures an educational and engaging experience.

Her project resulted in an innovative tourist product that brings heritage to life through technology and creative design. This demonstrates how gamification can be used effectively to tell heritage stories in an innovative way and offers City Game a new way to involve tourists and locals in their environment.
