One of the studies was conducted by Joris Sauerbier (rightmost in the photo), commissioned by the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab. His research focused on improving the sense of safety for mainly women in the area around Zuidplein, Rotterdam, through creative placemaking.
Joris initially investigated both the objective safety and the sense of safety on the Lijnbaan and around Zuidplein. By focusing the research on Zuidplein, where the sense of safety among women was relatively low, he was able to conduct a concrete design study.
Based on safety theories and literature, he identified various strategies to improve the sense of safety, such as improving sightlines, stimulating social cohesion and strengthening natural surveillance. Observations and conversations with women from the area showed that poor lighting, a lack of supervision and the grey environment were the biggest problems.
Together with local artists and residents, Sauerbier organised various co-creation sessions. During these sessions, prototypes were tested, such as laser projections to improve the lighting. Although these projects were partly successful, a more structural approach was needed. This led to the concept “Colour on South”, which focuses on transforming public space with colour, greenery and lighting.
The project resulted in community involvement and concrete plans for further improvement of the neighbourhood. The sessions not only made residents aware of the safety problem, but also actively involved them in solving it. The project emphasised the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the power of co-creation in promoting a safer and more attractive urban environment.
For continuity, an implementation plan was developed, which includes follow-up steps for the realisation of the “Colour on South” concept. This provides the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam with the tools to continue this valuable transformation of Zuidplein.
