On Tuesday 8 June, the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam hosted a design session on cultural tourism. The Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam is one of six living labs participating in the European project SmartCulTour, funded by the European Commission under the H2020 program. In the session various stakeholders determined how cultural tourism in Rotterdam could be shaped, what knowledge and information would be needed and which stakeholder could play a role in this at a given time. During the session, a 'Miro' board was used.

Ko Koens delivers inaugural address on reframing urban tourism

The coronavirus has turned tourism in cities upside down. The empty streets and squares invited us to think about how we deal with large numbers of visitors. Will we go back to our old ways in the future, or do we want change? Ko Koens, professor of New Urban Tourism, argues for the latter. In his inaugural lecture on 2 June, he outlined the possibilities of a radically different perspective. Look at tourism as an integral part of multiple processes that can make cities better. ‘We’re doing this in Rotterdam with the motto that actions speak louder than words. Together with students, we are exploring the possibilities in practice.’

Three years ago, Hogeschool Inholland began a collaboration with Kenniscentrum Immaterieel Erfgoed Nederland. The research assignment was: How can intangible heritage be positioned in a highly diversified quarter and made attractive to visitors? The West-Kruiskade in Rotterdam became a laboratory for several lines of research in which lecturers from the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam are closely involved.

How can the municipality of Rotterdam best deploy 3D Digital Twin?

With the Digital City project, the municipality of Rotterdam is investigating the opportunities and threats of digitization. Part of the project is the 3D Digital Twin. A digital representation of Rotterdam on which all fixed objects - such as houses, trees and benches - can be seen. This twin of the city is supplemented with data and therefore provides valuable information. Which parking spaces are occupied? How long is a lamp post burning?
